Merck Gave $50,000 To Fundraiser Governor Chaired

The relationship between Merck and Texas Governor Rick Perry is starting to look more and more cozy.
Although the original campaign donation that was the subject of serious controversy was a mere drop in the bucket compared to other money Perry has received, now it has been discovered that Merck gave $50,000 to a GOP fund-raiser chaired by the Governor:
The maker of an anti-cancer vaccine that Gov. Rick Perry mandated for Texas schoolgirls contributed $50,000 to a GOP fundraiser chaired by the governor, but a spokesman for the organization said Tuesday that the donation had nothing to do with Perry’s controversial order.
Merck & Co. has contributed $50,000 a year for at least the past six years, said Nick Ayers, executive director of the Republican Governors Association.
“It’s just a part of what they do annually,” he said.
“What they do annually,” means, of course, “the manner in which they grease the wheels.”
The donation was to a Republican Governor’s Association fund-raiser, which Perry chaired.

Yes…but,
How is this any different from the money unions give Democrats as U.S. House Democrats discuss legislation making it easier to join a union?
While I support making joining unions easier, I also think the money unions give Democrats has an impact. The concern you seem to have is the system as a whole. I’m very open to that concern.
However, until the campaign finance laws are changed or until voters get more mad over the role of money of campaigns, I don’t see how Merck or Governor Perry or the Republican governors are doing anything any different from what Democrats do as well.
