Pledge Bill To Get Hearing

Rep. Debbie Riddle’s HB 1034, the bill to add the words “state, under God,” to the pledge to the Texas Flag, should finally get a hearing before the House Committee on Culture, Recreation & Tourism today at 2 p.m. or upon final adjournment.
Since I last checked, this legislation now has a number of co-sponsors, both Democratic and Republican, who are swallowing the Kool-Aide on this one.
As we’ve said time and again, changing the pledge, which has remained unchanged since 1933 (except for one corrective action in 1965) is a bad, bad, move—especially when it’s part of a trend by the Religious Right to slap the words “under God,” on everything that will stand still long enough to allow it.
Tampering with an historic thing like the pledge is unnecessary and a bad idea.
