80th Legislature: Leo Berman Is Angry About His Immigration Bills

The Tyler Morning Telegraph described State Rep. Leo Berman (R-Tyler) as “angry” over the fact that the House State Affairs Committee won’t allow some of his anti-immigrant bills to get to the floor.

I’d say, however, that “pissed” sounds like a much better word based on Berman’s comments:

“With 1.6 million illegal aliens in Texas, costing Texans $3.5 billion a year; with the emergency rooms of many public hospitals in chaos, and with 12,500 illegal aliens in the Texas prison system as of last August, if this issue is too ‘divisive’ for the Texas Legislature to debate and attempt some solution, who in the world should discuss this issue?” he asked.

Wow. Illegal immigration causes emergency rooms to be chaos? I thought that was because of the high number of uninsured people—including children—in Texas. Perhaps if Rep. Berman wanted to make emergency rooms more calm, he’d work to restore full funding (and then some) to the Children’s Health Insurance Program.

Rep. David Swinford (R-Dumas), who chairs State Affairs, said of Berman’s bills and many similar ones:

“It’s inappropriate and a waste of the state’s money,” said Rep. David Swinford, chairman of the House Committee on State Affairs, which held a joint meeting Wednesday with the Border and International Affairs Committee on immigration-related legislation.

That, and, of course, they’d be as unconstitutional as all get out.
