Ruth Jones McClendon On TRRC Amendments
By Vince Leibowitz on Mar 30, 2007 in 80th Legislature
State Rep. Ruth Jones McClendon (through a staffer) was gracious enough to leave a comment here on Capitol Annex this evening concerning the amendments related to the Texas Residential Construction Commission which we discussed in an earlier post. Rep. McClendon noted:
I share your justified outrage at the Texas Residential Construction Commission’s failure to protect consumers. However, I voted against gutting the agency’s funding because I currently have legislation before the State Affairs Committee, House Bill 1686, that will give the agency the teeth it needs to enforce consumer protections and regulate the homebuilders’ industry. To have removed funding from the agency before we reformed it would have left consumers with no recourse, and the industry with no state oversight, whatsoever. I respect the intentions of my colleagues Reps. Dunnam and Coleman, as we all find TRCC’s inaction deplorable, but we differ on the solution. Signed, Rep. Ruth Jones McClendon.
I certainly respect that, and Rep. Jones McClendon. I hope her legislation to put teeth in TRRC passes. Also, please keep in mind that, in the earlier post, when I noted what votes for various amendments do or do not mean, I was by no means indicating that any of our Democratic Reps fall into those categories. Like Rep. Jones McClendon, I’m sure they had good reasons for their votes as opposed to Republicans voting the party line.
