80th Legislature: Another Road Block To Higher Education
By Vince Leibowitz on Apr 9, 2007 in 80th Legislature
Evidently, there simply aren’t enough roadblocks to accessible high education in Texas.
Now, State Rep. Vicki Truitt wants every student enrolling in an institution of higher learning in Texas to have medical insurance before they enroll. Those who don’t will have to purchase it through the school.
This is insane. While many families are fortunate enough to have insurance coverage that will cover dependent children through their college years, many low- and middle-income Texas families aren’t this fortunate.
The bill in question, HB 3321, goes before the Texas House Higher Education Committee on Tuesday.
This is another roadblock to an affordable college education for Texas’ young people. If a student doesn’t have insurance and is forced to purchase it through the school, it’s likely another expense many students will be forced to use student loans to pay for, meaning that they’ll be faced with even more student loan debt when they graduate.
