TX-SEN 08: Cornyn’s Numbers Dismal

By Vince Leibowitz  on Apr 24, 2007 in 2008 Texas Elections

A new DSCC poll shows that John Cornyn’s numbers are slowly drowning in the toliet, to put it bluntly.

3. Republican John Cornyn has lower than expected name recognition for an incumbent US Senator, with 39% of the electorate unable to rate Cornyn either favorably or unfavorably. Overall he is 41% favorable – 19% unfavorable.

4. Senator Cornyn’s generic reelect versus a Democrat is under 50% (47% Republican John Cornyn - 38% Democratic candidate; 15% undecided).

In addition to the generic match-up, we’ve also heard rumblings that (either in this poll or another) Cornyn was actually matched head to head with “profiles” of generic Democratic candidates as well as one specific potential Democratic candidate. More on that as it develops.

Also of interest, we heard a rumbling today that if Cornyn’s numbers remain in the toilet, he’ll face a primary challenge from Lt. Governor Dewhurst, who may not want to hedge any of his bets on what may or may not happen in 2010. A possible Dewhurst run is reportedly favored by a number of leading Republicans who fear the seat could be lost in the ‘08 cycle, especially if Democrats sweep the Texas House, maintain control of Congress, and get a lock on 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
