Voting Machines Are Out In The House! They’re Having Roll Call Votes–Real Ones!

By Vince Leibowitz  on May 2, 2007 in 80th Legislature

The voting board and electronic voting system is evidently broken at this time. There is a renewable energy amendment by Burnam  to HB 1188 up right now.

Morrison moved to table the amendment. It was a voice vote, but Burnam called for a record vote. So, Craddick has everyone in favor stand up, then everyone against stand up, and calls it for “aye” votes on the motion to table.

Then Dunnam gets up and points out that Burnam asked for a record vote and asked how the stand up/sit down thing was a record vote (we were wondering that ourselves).

So, Craddick said he misunderstood (we didn’t and were expecting a full roll call vote) and now the House Clerks are calling the roll and using old fashioned pen and paper to take down the results.

Burnam noted this was going to be the only record vote on renewable energy this year. I’m glad they forced it to this kind of a record vote.

(They just mispronounced Joe Farias’ name, by the way. We’ve been at this like four minutes and they’re only down to the F’s. Also, Castro wasn’t in the Chamber (evidently), when his name was called, and the clerk called his name once, then kind of looked around at the two standing next to her, called it again, no answer, and then looked around some more…I don’t think she was quite too sure of what to do in a case where the member isn’t there when called…she eventually moved on.)

Strangely, this roll call is looking pretty close…we’ll keep you posted.
