Perry Thinks Guns In The Capitol Are Okay!

By Vince Leibowitz  on May 8, 2007 in 80th Legislature

The latest dose of idiocy in the Capitol Security Debate:

“The governor believes if a Texan is properly licensed and permitted they should have the ability to exercise their second amendment rights in their state Capitol,” Perry spokesman Robert Black said.

Yeah…because no lawful, gun permit-possessing, right-wing Texan will ever, uh, you know…forget their meds and decide to go nuts. That’s a totally safe proposal. Sure, governor!

And a huge flock of pigs just few over the Texas Capitol and landed on Congress Avenue.

Having been in the Capitol many times with my concealed handgun, let me say you are full of shit. The Capitol has been open to CHL holders since the law was passed more than 10 years ago. Legislators have had the option to BAN HANDGUNS in hearings and floor sessions since the law was passed. Other than a few times when an anti-gunner wet his/her pants over having a hearing on some anti-gun bill, no hearing has ever been closed to CHL.

And your “victim disarmament” feeling has proven to be a KILLER. Look at Virginia Tech.

So you want to walk around with your head in the clouds and depend on someone else to protect you, go for it. Just don’t expect me to look out for you if the shit hits the fan.

    fifty cal:

I’m well aware that handguns have been legal in the capitol unless specified for specific committees, etc.

However, there is a difference between that being a fact and the Governor of Texas endorsing the idea of an armed populous of people roaming through the capitol. Perhaps some folks take their guns in now but by and large, most visitors, etc., wouldn’t dream of carrying a handgun into the Texas Capitol.

My view is that all weapons should be banned in the Capitol and on the Capitol Grounds. I damned sure don’t want to be sitting in the gallery next to some guy whose concealed handgun accidentally goes off. You *know* there are some people who carry those permits who are idiots and irresponsible with their firearms. Say some woman packing a pistol in her purse drops it and the gun skids across the floor and shoots a kid in the foot.

“No guns in the capitol” is as much a protection from accidents and stupid people as it is for people who might intend to do harm to a politician.

And, you could easily exempt the groups of young school kids by having them use a designated enterance. It wouldn’t gum up the works that much to check for weapons.

Well, let’s see how many logical inconsistencies we can find in this statement. People that have been TRAINED in the CHL program know that government owned property, unless specifically banned, is open to ALL CHL holders.

“All weapons should be banned”. How about the DPS officers that roam around with evil guns? Take them away also? And then a VT shooter comes in and they are supposed to do what? “Rush” him? Take a bullet for you?

How does a concealed handgun “accidentally” go off? When it’s sitting in a holster? Don’t know much about guns do you.

“Idiots and irresonsible” people with CHL get the CHl revoked if they do stupid things. About 18 out of 250,000.

Gun falls out of purse and goes off? Where has that happened? Only if they are carrying a 1875 model Colt with a fixed firing pin. Don’t know many people that carry that.

I believe you just have an irrational fear of guns and that colours your “thinking”.

Those of us in the DFW metroplex have vivid images of what one lunatic with a gun can do in a court room. We have metal detectors at our court houses now having experienced mass murders because everyone licensed to carry is not a “responsible gun owner.”
Wonder how different the face of Texas Politics would be if Texans hadn’t been so tied to their pistols that they voted Ann Richards out of the Governor’s chair over her refusal to endorse concealed handguns!
