The Rubber Chicken Around John Cornyn’s Neck

By Vince Leibowitz  on Jul 13, 2007 in 2010 Texas Elections

In 1978, Bill Clements did his best to hang Jimmy Carter as the proverbial albatross around then-Attorney General John Hill’s neck in the race for governor, even to the point of using a rubber chicken as a prop.

Almost 30 years later, the shoe chicken is on the other foot neck:

Cornyn has scheduled a series of fund-raisers for the weekend of July 20, featuring presidential adviser Karl Rove.

Congratulations, John Cornyn! You have provided your opponents with a fantastic rubber chicken to hang around your neck: Karl Rove.

Surely, no one reading this blog is at a loss to determine why Karl Rove headlining a fund-raiser for Cornyn is the equivalent of Cornyn tacking a diamond-studded, “Kick Me” sign on his back.

As Matt Glazer notes over at Stop Cornyn, Rove and Cornyn are buddies going back quite a ways:

Cornyn’s trip with Rove might seem surprising because the senator recently began distancing himself from the president on the issue of immigration. But from his 2002 election until recently, Cornyn has been a staunch Bush supporter.

Rove helped Cornyn win election to the Texas Supreme Court in 1996, recruited Cornyn to run for state attorney general in 1998 and again to run for the U.S. Senate in 2002.

Get out your rubber chickens. It’s going to be a hell of a ride.
