HD 86: Smithee To Retire?
Vince Leibowitz | Aug 01, 2007 | Comments 1
Capitol Annex has learned that State Rep. John Smithee (R-Amarillo), House District 86, will not seek another term in 2008.
Sources tell Capitol Annex that Smithee has, in fact, informed Speaker Tom Craddick he will not seek another term.
Of course, Republicans are also trying to keep a lid on the announcement as they attempt to round up a reliable right-winger to run the race. Sources say there is also some possibility Smithee could retire early in an attempt to give the GOP establishment’s hand-picked opponent an early start with a special election.
Of course, that strategy failed miserably when it was tried in HD 48, and Donna Howard (D-Austin) bested Ben Bentzin (R-Austin).

Too bad. John Smithee thought for himself and often stood up against the party line. It would be unfortunate if this district sent a right-wing nut to take his place — there is a difference between Rs. Smithee could be a good one at times.
