Perry’s Iranian Divestment Agenda: Another Veep Ploy?

Texas Governor Rick Perry has never publicly stated that he’d be interested in being Vice President, although there has been talk of a book deal to promote his conservative bona fides and his 2007 State of the State Address addressed more national topics than state legislative ones.
Now, in addition to being a possible ploy for a special session in which he can tack Voter ID onto the call, Perry’s Iranian divestment blabbering is, yet again, tossing him into the soft, fuzzy, glow of the Veep Spotlight:
The idea’s popularity isn’t surprising, said Larry Sabato, director of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville.
Regardless of the motive, “politically, you can’t lose. Iran is a devil figure,” he said.
Rice University political scientist Bob Stein agreed that the position has “no downside” for the Texas governor and said there could be any of number of motives.
Among the possibilities, Stein said: “He thinks this is good policy. … It’s a way to put himself in play for vice presidential consideration … it takes some heat off of him” for moves that have been criticized, such as a veto of some funds slated for community colleges.
Perry spokeswoman Krista Moody said Perry is fueled by “public service and doing what is right for Texas.”
Oh, *sigh*. If we have to suffer through any more plays by Rick Perry to put himself into vice presidential consideration, we’ll be building a 75-foot-high wall along the Texas-Mexico border, declaring English as the official language of Texas, and outlawing soy milk. Jeez.
