State House News: Will Mike O’Day Resign, Special Elections, New Candidates And More

By Vince Leibowitz  on Aug 17, 2007 in 2008 Texas Elections, Texas Legislature

For a Friday, there is no shortage of news related to Texas House seats and races.

First and foremost, it seems as though Texas Safety Forum has heard some of the same rumors we have about State Rep. Mike O’Day (R-Pearland).  We’ve heard two different versions of the rumor (and we emphasize they are rumors), one of which says O’Day is resigning because the stress of the job are too much after his recent heart attack and another that says he is preparing to resign because he is about to be sued as a result of some of what Chris talked about in his post (linked above).

In the same neighborhood, Ken Legler (R-Pasadena), a business man, is the first one out of the gate for the GOP primary to replace Rep. Robert Talton, who is going to run in CD 22.

Over in HD 43, South Padre Island Alderwoman Tara Rios Ybarra has announced she will challenge Rep. Juan Escobar (D-Kingsville).  The Valley Morning Star’s Island Breeze blog doesn’t specify what Ybarra’s party affiliation is.

Heading up to the Metroplex, popular Mesquite mayor Mike Anderson says he’ll resign as mayor early next week to oppose Rep. Thomas Latham (R-Sunnyvale) in the Republican primary for Texas House District 101.

I’ve not looked at the demographics of this district to see if the GOP primary bloodbath could give an edge to a Democrat…but it is in Dallas County.

Finally, Governor Perry has set November 6 as the special election day for Anna Mowery’s state rep seat in Tarrant County. The filing deadline is August 31. Expect a boatload of Republicans who have been waiting in line behind Mowery to file. One Democrat has already announced, and the seat is ripe for trending.
