Is Cornyn In Line To Replace Gonzales?
By Vince Leibowitz on Aug 27, 2007 in 2008 Texas Elections
With Texan Alberto Gonzales resigning as U.S. Attorney General today, rumors are swirling once again that U.S. Senator John Cornyn is on President Bush’s “short list” for potential replacements.
This is in part, of course, because of Cornyn’s loyalty to Bush and his administration. In addition, Capitol Annex is advised by our sources that Republicans at the national level believe that the Texas Senate seat Cornyn holds will be lost in 2008 if he continues to hold it, and that it would fare much better in the hands of Fort Worth Congresswoman Kay Granger former Congressman Henry Bonillia, both of whom are rumored to be the President’s top choices for the seat if he ends up snatching Cornyn into the executive branch.
Texas Governor Rick Perry, however, would get the say on who the nominee would be, and Austin rumors are already swirling that the Senate would be a nice place to stash Roger Williams to keep him out of the Governor’s Mansion or even Texas Association of Business head Bill Hammond.
Interesting gossip swirling this morning….
