We’ve Been In A Spam War…
Vince Leibowitz | Sep 06, 2007 | Comments 1
As you may have noticed, posting was slow today. That’s because we here at Capitol Annex have been engaged pretty much full-time in fighting an ongoing war against spam bots. Capitol Annex was being spammed at the rate of about 3 spam comments per minute for several days. This, contrary to what our hosting company initially told us, caused us to end up offline for a while.
Needless to say, we’ve implemented about 5 different spam fighting measures. How well they’ll work remains to be seen, but we’re by no means getting three spam comments per minute anymore, so they must have some effect.
One of our spam fighting tools involves limited IP banning. There may be a bug or two in this system, so if you ever get banned from Capitol Annex in the future because your IP got spoofed, just email us at vince.leibowitz-at-gmail.com and we’ll unban you.
You’ll also notice we’ve had to implement reCAPTCHA technologies in the comments. We’ll see how this works for a month or so; if it’s keeping good folks from commenting, we’ll dump it.
In the mean time, expect us to be back to full posting strength immediately.

I feel your pain. Today I deleted more than 400 spams from WhosPlayin.com. Keep up the good fight!
