More Than 100 ISD’s To Hold Rollback Elections

By Vince Leibowitz  on Sep 11, 2007 in Texas Public Policy & Taxation

Via TexasISD, we find this list of more than 100 Texas independent school districts who have scheduled tax roll-back elections to date. This quote from QR is particularly telling:

If all elections have been called and Smith’s verification holds true, the final tally for tax rate elections will be at or near 108. That would be a little under 10 percent of all school districts in the state of Texas calling a tax rate election less than two years after House Bill 1 was passed and, ironically, before the new business tax is in place.

The biggest school districts on Smith’s list are Ysleta, San Marcos and San Antonio. Most of the districts, however, are smaller and rural, with lower property values. Gov. Rick Perry’s home school district of Paint Creek is on the list, plus nearby Haskell. So is former Education Commissioner Shirley Neeley’s home district, Galena Park. And, yes, even Edgewood, the home of the first school finance challenge, is on the list.

This just goes to show that Rick Perry’s “tax reform” proposals didn’t work and weren’t “real reform.” Until Texas totally revamps its tax structure, we’ll not be getting anywhere in the tax rate department.
