State Will Pay Nearly $10K In Rent Per Month To Perry Contributor For Governor’s New Digs

Most of us are actually glad to see the Texas Governor’s Mansion getting a face lift. But, that doesn’t mean a few questions aren’t in order.

While it’s understandable that temporary housing for the governor and his family won’t be cheap, it is odd (or, perhaps, par for the course) that the state’s rent money will be going to a Perry contributor:

The home is being leased from Murrell Campbell through his daughter and son-in-law, Melinda and Guy Grace. Grace has contributed $3,500 a year to Perry’s campaign since 2005, but Black said Perry has not met Grace.

The rent for the governor’s temporary digs will run $9,900 per month. I’m no Austin real estate expert, but this seems a tad high. However, given that–no matter who the governor is–they need a house fit for entertaining, their personal space, and their personal safety, I’m willing to go out on a limb and say the price isn’t an issue.

What is an issue, however, is that Perry just happens to have selected a house for the state to rent him which is owned by a contributor. It is also interesting that Perry’s spokesman Robert Black has mentioned that Perry has “never met” someone who has given around $10,000 to his campaign.

If Perry’s entire administration hadn’t been plagued by things like his trip to the Bahamas with James Leininger, I think even the most rabid Perry haters would let this pass and just say, “who cares.” But, in the context of everything that has happened since Perry has done in office, this just looks like another par-for-the-course scandal.

Sad, sad, sad.
