Can You Say “Irony?” Conservative Coalition Creates “Election Integrity Task Force”

By Vince Leibowitz  on Oct 5, 2007 in Texas Legislature

If you need a laugh on this early Friday evening, then think about the fact that the Texas Conservative Coalition Research Institute has created an “Election Integrity Task Force.”

If you aren’t doubled over laughing yet, then try this on for size: Voter ID shrew Rep. Betty Brown (R-Terrell) is chair of the task force!

Once you pick yourself off the floor and get back in your chair, read from her weekly “Austin Update:”

The Texas Conservative Coalition Research Institute announced on Tuesday the formation of an Election Integrity Task Force, chaired by Rep. Betty Brown, to secure individuals’ right to vote and ensure that elections are free from fraud.

Rep. Brown expressed great concern for the current state of elections in Texas: “Our most important right in this country is the right to vote, but fraud is too often treated almost casually, if not indifferently.”? Rep. Brown continued, “Loopholes and lax enforcement of voting laws have created a system that is far too easy to defraud.”

She added, “Every fraudulent vote counted is a legal voter disenfranchised.? That trade off is completely unacceptable.”

“Through the Election Integrity Task Force, we will deliver a package of reforms to win back the public confidence in elections,” urged Rep. Brown.? “By enforcing existing election laws and creating new measures to combat fraud,” added Rep. Brown, “we can guarantee that only legal, eligible voices are heard in elections.”

The Election Integrity Task Force goals include:

*stepped-up investigation and prosecution of vote fraud;

*purging voter rolls of non-citizens and the deceased;

*citizenship verification of all registered and newly registered voters;

*photo identification at the polls.

Hell, what’s the point of this task force even holding a meeting? We all know their chief recommendation will be “VOTER ID!”

    I should have checked here first. I just put something up on my site, along with that youtube clip from earlier this year about voting multiple times in the House. If you check their website everything is outdated. There’s no mention of who is on this task force that she chairs. Of course the goal is VOTER ID. Perhaps they should have left the word Integrity out of the title.
