It is being reported that Texas Governor Rick Perry will be endorsing former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani for President on Wednesday.
This is indeed an interesting development if it pans out. For ultra-right-wing-conservative governor of Texas to endorse arguably the most liberal candidate in the GOP field helps Giuliani but will hurt Perry, who is already likely to face a number of opponents in the 2010 GOP Primary for Governor.
The speculation about Perry endorsing Giuliani comes on the heels of an announcement by former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson’s campaign that he was being endorsed by Texas AG Gregg Abbott, Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson and Railroad Commissioner Victor Carrillo.
While Perry’s endorsement places him on a political tightrope in a state with the nation’s most conservative Republican Party in America, it does further speculation that Perry is angling for a spot on the presidential ticket as the number two man. Were Giuliani, who is presently leading in most GOP polls, to win the nomination, the appointment of Perry as a vice presidential candidate could help assuage fears of right-wing religious leaders (like James Dobson) and ultra-conservatives presently threatening to support a third party or independent candidate if Giuliani is nominated.
