Congressman Nick Lampson (D-Stafford) dwarfed seven Republican challengers for his CD-22 seat in fundraising for the third quarter, raising more nearly $325,000 from July through the end of September.
Shelley Sekula-Gibbs (R-Clear Lake), who waged a write-in candidacy against Lampson last year for the seat vacated by indicted former U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Sugar Land) , came in closest to Lampson but was still far behind his total raising slightly more than $174,000. Another challenger, Pete Olson (R-Clear Lake) was close on her heels, however, pulling in nearly $168,000.
Both Sekula-Gibbs and Olson also reported heavy campaign debts. Sekula-Gibbs reported nearly half a million dollars in campaign debt–$469,000. Olson reported $50,000 in debt.
State Rep. Robert Talton (R-Pasadena), believed to be a favorite for the seat, reported raising a paltry $34,700 for the quarter and maintained only a hair more than $28,000 in cash on hand as of the end of September.
Lampson maintained a strong lead in terms of cash on hand, with over half a million dollars ($679,488.12). Sekula-Gibbs claimed roughly $465,000 on hand.
