Hutchison’s SCHIP Vote More In Line With Texas Than Cornyn’s

The Austin American Statesman took a little look at Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison’s vote on SCHIP reauthorization and expansion this morning:

Republican U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas consistently voted for a children’s health insurance bill President Bush opposed. But only after voting for a bill GOP leaders favored.

No flip-flopping. Hutchison was covering her bases.

Texas leads the nation in uninsured children. But the state remains strongly Republican. The party’s conservatives who see the program as a step toward government-run health care still turn out heavily in Texas GOP primaries.

Although Hutchison’s vote on SCHIP was the right moral vote, it was also the right political vote. And, though Hutchison is a party-line-towing Republican, she is not, quite simply put, as stupid as her colleague, Junior Senator John Cornyn–especially as she looks toward a possible 2010 run for Texas Governor.

Hutchison, unlike Cornyn, can see the writing on the wall: the issue of sick kids without health insurance resonates with Texas voters. A long list of legislative Republicans, including the once-powerful Appropriations Committee Chair Talmadge Heflin (R-Houston) has falln in part as a result of their anti-CHIP votes. Clearly, Hutchison doesn’t want yet another black mark on an anti-consumer, anti-family voting record she has amassed in her time in the U.S. Senate.
