SA Business Establishment Wants To Groom Montford For Governor

Add another name to the ever-growing list of people running for or being groomed for a race for Governor in 2010: former State Senator John Montford.

This summer, it was rumored that Montford would enter the U.S. Senate race against John Cornyn. Via the San Antonio Express-News, it appears as though some of the San Antonio establishment is trying to recruit Montford for the 2010 governor’s race via a run for San Antonio Mayor in 2009:

And if some connected folks have their way, Montford would either dramatically alter the 2009 mayoral landscape or the 2010 governor’s race.

County Judge Nelson Wolff, a close friend of Montford’s, said he’s also on the “recruit Montford” bandwagon — but not for mayor. Wolff said former Gov. Dolph Briscoe recently enlisted his help to try to convince Montford to seek the 2010 Democratic nomination for Texas governor.

There’s even one talked-about scenario that would have the onetime Lubbock-area senator run for mayor of San Antonio to raise his statewide profile for a later gubernatorial bid.

In addition to the havoc such a power-play would have on the candidacy of former SA City Councilman Julian Castro, who will likely seek the mayoral post in 2009, it would throw yet another “establishment-style” candidate into the 2010 governor’s race on the Democratic side (with Houston Mayor Bill White being the other).
