Long Awaited Perry Book Will Be About Boy Scouts
By Vince Leibowitz on Oct 30, 2007 in Texas Governor
Here’s something to chalk up to the “I didn’t expect this” department:
Gov. Rick Perry, a proud Eagle Scout, has written a book about the Boy Scouts of America that’s due out early next year.
You have got to be kidding me. What is he running for now, Chairman of the Boy Scouts of America?
And, get this:
“The pin the governor has always worn all these years on his lapel is an Eagle Scout pin,” noted spokesman Robert Black. “He’s very, very proud of that.”
I actually have had my picture made with Rick Perry on one occasion. And, there is no Eagle Scout lapel pin visible anywhere. (I know because, being an Eagle Scout, I have one). The only jewlery he was wearing that is visible in the photo is a gold bracelet, just barely visible peaking out of his suit sleeve.
More about the book:
The book “addresses the challenges the Boy Scouts have had in recent history,” Black said. Among those challenges are lawsuits claiming discrimination.
Black said Perry has been talking “for years” about writing such a book but never had the time. Somehow he found it in the wake of last year’s election, despite the legislative session and a travel schedule that has taken him around the country and beyond.
Perry wrote the book with someone, but Black wouldn’t say who it is or who’s publishing the book.
“He put a lot of it down on paper himself,” Black said.
That’s very nice, but Perry is the last person I’d ever expect to write a book on the Scouting movement.
