State Senator Dan Patrick Downplays Seriousness Of Colonias Problem

I’m not sure how I missed this, but late last month, Texas State Senator Dan Patrick (R-Houston) appeared on CNN’s The Glenn Beck Show to offer his special brand of asshattery on Congressman Henry Cuellar (D-Laredo) and House Speker Nancy Pelosi. Here’s a video clip, with more analysis to follow:

[BECK:] Joining me now is Texas state senator Dan Patrick. Dan is also a talk radio host on KSEV 700 AM in Houston, my new affiliate in Houston.
Dan, first of all, did she [House Speaker Nancy Pelosi] even mention the kidnapped Americans, 21 of which are still missing?
DAN PATRICK, TEXAS STATE SENATOR: Not to my knowledge, Glenn. She was focused on the colonias, you know, these areas of poverty. And I’ve toured the colonias.
BECK: Yes.
PATRICK: And what I find interesting, Glenn, is that I was with an African-American legislator on my last trip down to the border going through the colonia.
And he said, “You know, Dan, we’ve got neighborhoods worst than this in Houston.” And I would say probably New York, Detroit, Appalachia and all around America. She focused on these poor neighborhoods, and she didn’t focus on the poor kidnapped Americans.
Senator Patrick clearly has no concept of how stupid what he said really is. He is trying to downplay the seriousness of the Colonia problem in Texas.
First and foremost, in downtown Houston–even in its worst areas–I believe that those people do at least have access to water, sewer, electric utilities. In other words, whether they are able to afford to use them or not, the utility companies at least bring those services to their property. In the colonias, many places don’t even have that! No utility company brings running water and electricity to many areas of the colonias.
Leave it to Dan Patrick to try to screw around with the facts to take pot shots at Democrats.
