Trautman Will Challenge Bettencourt: Why This Is One Of The Most Important Races Of 2008

By Vince Leibowitz  on Dec 5, 2007 in 2010 Texas Elections

With more than 250 counties in Texas, we aren’t able to pay attention to every single county level race–even in the major urban counties. However, one race that we are sure to follow is that of the race for Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector.

Trautman

Why will we be following the Harris TA/C race? Two reasons:

1.) Paul Bettencourt is one of the biggest dangers to Texans’ right to vote.

2.) Because Diane Trautman can defeat him.

Today, former House District 127 candidate and university professor Dr. Diane Trautman announced that she will file for the Democratic Party’s nomination to challenge Bettencourt.

This is great news not only because Trautman is a great candidate and will add a lot of depth to the slate that is set to turn Harris County ‘blue,’ but also because Bettencourt could aptly be called one of the most dangerous politicians in Texas.

Everyone knows that Bettencourt has serious ambition for higher office, and that he has the anti-tax, right-wing, Republican crowd in his camp 100 percent. What many people may not realize, however, is the role that Bettencourt has played in enabling the Republican regime at the state leveland even the federal level:

Is voting taken so lightly that we cannot require so little an effort as the production of a photo ID? We require such identification from those buying tobacco or alcohol, boarding an aiplane or using a credit card. Those not having a photo ID can be provided one by government at no cost to the voter.

Bettencourt is one of the biggest Voter ID shrills around. And, if he is successful in winning another term and then becomes more “upwardly mobile” (many suspect he’ll run for Governor in 2010), his anti-tax agenda will destroy public education in Texas as we know it.

So, while this race is clearly important to the folks in Harris County for a number of reasons, it is also important to Progressives across Texas.

links from Technoratiidea of representative government is purging voter rolls and pushing for a Voter ID law that targets Latinos, African Americans, the economically disadvantaged, and elderly voters. A strong challenge is just what the incumbent needs. My colleague,Vince at Capitol Annex, tells us why this race will be among the most important in Texas in ‘08.
