TX HD 98: Moffat Will Run Against Truitt…As A Democrat

Ever wonder what happened to former members of the Texas Legislature? Well, if you were ever wondering about Nancy Moffat, she’s now back and running against State Rep. Vicki Truitt (R-Keller). As a Democrat. Jobsanger has more, too. Here is a bit from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram:

Former state Rep. Nancy Moffat, who lost her seat in the Legislature a decade ago when she was defeated in the Republican primary by Vicki Truitt of Keller, is trying to win back the post by running as a Democrat in 2008. Last week, Moffat, 56, filed to run for the seat representing District 98.

Art Brender, chairman of the Tarrant County Democratic Party, said that Moffat “told me she was OK on the pro-choice issue,” supports the state-administered Children’s Health Insurance Program and opposes school vouchers and Republican House Speaker Tom Craddick, who in 2007 survived two efforts to remove him as speaker.

Moffat, who served three terms in Austin, said she switched parties out of concern that Republicans have lost their connection to ordinary Texans on such issues as healthcare, environmental protection and education.

“It wasn’t so much that I left the Republican Party as much as it was that the party left me,” Moffat said. “They’re all about the wealthy, and I want to be for the little guy and the middle guy.”

Truitt, who defeated Moffat 61 percent to 39 percent in the 1998 GOP primary runoff and by an even wider margin two years later, said she was unconcerned about Moffat’s comeback attempt.

Truitt is, of course, no favorite of any bloggers thanks to her sad attempts to pass a blogger libel bill last session. I’m damned near ready to endorse Moffat site-unseen, but I do believe she’ll have a primary opponent. I seem to remember meeting another contender for the D’s nomination earlier this year while at a meeting of the Denton County Democrats’ Farm Team. Not sure if that lady is still going to file or not, though. Either way, it’s good to have candidates stepping up against Truitt–not to mention that more Republicans are realizing that the GOP is not representative of the mainstream.

links from Technoratiit was that the party left me,” Moffat said. “They’re all about the wealthy, and I want to be for the little guy and the middle guy.” Recall that Dan Barrett in neighboring HD-97 was just elected in a similarly believed-to-be-red district. Recall alsowhy Vicki Truitt is odious: Truitt is, of course, no favorite of any bloggers thanks to her sad attempts to pass a blogger libel bill last session. Hat tip to jobsanger here also. — It takes a woman’s POV to remind us men that
