TX HD 78: Haggerty Challenges Dee Margo’s Residency
By Vince Leibowitz on Jan 3, 2008 in 2008 Texas Elections
State Rep. Pat Haggerty, in a race for the Republican nomination against El Paso businessman Dee Margo for House District 78, on Wednesday charged that Margo does not meet residency requirements to run for the seat.
Haggerty said at a Republican Party meeting that according to Margo’s campaign filing, Margo is 10 days shy of the state-required one year of residence in the district from election day.
Haggerty passed around copies of Margo’s campaign filing and added that the question of Margo’s eligibility may be settled in court.
The challenge sparked a tense confrontation Wednesday night between the two Republican candidates, who attended the party meeting and celebration to launch the coming election season.
“We’ll do what is necessary to correct it,” Margo said.
“We will get it resolved quickly.”
News flash, Dee Margo: You cannot resolve this “quickly.” If you don’t meet the residency requirement, you don’t meet it. Aside from lying to say that you do (either on a sworn application or otherwise), what are you going to do? This is not a simple facial defect in a filing, this is a flat-out, no-holds-barred screw up.
