TRAVIS DA: Earle Endorses Lehmberg

Travis County DA Ronnie Earle this morning formally endorsed First Assistant Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg in the Democratic Primary race which will determine the legendary prosecutor’s successor.

In a speech endorsing Lehmberg this morning, Earle noted:

Ours is a great office, and the reason is because different ideas are discussed in a tone of mutual respect. We disagree with each other sometimes. We always have. That diversity of opinion discussed with respect has enabled the office to do great work.

That work is to see that justice is done. The result of that work, done well, is public safety.

Austin is one of the safest cities in the country for its size. That is no accident. It is the result of cooperation over the years between the Travis County District Attorney’s Office and the people of this community.

The single most important thing a leader can do is set a tone of integrity and respectful, open discussion of different points of view. Rosemary Lehmberg has done that daily for many years.

She has been the chief of every major division in the District Attorney’s Office…

[...]
Rosemary Lehmberg has been the director and supervisor of every division of this office. For the past ten years as First Assistant Travis County District Attorney she has supervised the work of all these divisions.

She has risen to the position of First Assistant precisely because of her leadership qualities, her judgment and her ability to set that crucial tone of respectfulness that brings people together and ensures open discussion and debate of differing ideas in the spirit of seeing that justice is done.

Rosemary Lehmberg has had a greater role in the success of the Travis County District Attorney’s Office than any other single person.

Our community is indeed fortunate to have such a gifted leader as Rosemary Lehmberg to serve as the next Travis County District Attorney.

Given that the race was pretty much wide-open until this point, although Montford has the cash advantage, having raised a significant amount before Lehmberg announced her intentions, Earle’s endorsement will likely make a major difference in this race. Clearly, the citizens of Travis County regard Earle with high esteem, and his endorsement of Lehmberg will likely help many voters move over to her camp.
