TRAVIS DA: More Interesting Items

UPDATED (SEE BELOW)
Stories and rumors are the most interesting thing to follow in political races–aside from the issues. Because these stories and rumors get legs of their own, and often become legend after a political campaign, we at Capitol Annex think it is important to chronicle them and make the public aware of those, especially for historical purposes.

The latest going around about the Montford campaign is that, over the Christmas holidays, Mindy Montford and her father, AT&T honcho and former state senator John Montford, visited with potential supporters to let them know she planned to run for Travis County DA if Ronnie Earle opted out of another term. A number of people were told she already had about $200,000 in hand, with the implication that the checks were postdated and wouldn’t show up on campaign finance reports until late in the race. Her report, filed earlier this week, showed just over $45,000 raised before the December 31 deadline.

We’ve emailed Cathy Conoley at Ms. Montford’s campaign for their comment, and will add it when we receive it.

If anyone else has any great future legendary stories, send them our way.

UPDATE:

Cathy Conley with Ms. Montford’s campaign has given us the following statement on this:

“And the answer is- Absolutely 100% not true. There are no post-dated unreported checks. Every check received was deposited.”
