Texas AFl-CIO COPE Convention Liveblogging: Address Of Ray McMurrey

By Vince Leibowitz  on Jan 19, 2008 in Texas AFL-CIO Convention Liveblogging

[U.S. Senate candidate Ray McMurrey spoke Saturday morning at the Texas AFL-CIO's COPE Convention. The following is liveblogging of his remarks.]

“I am running for this office because I truly believe that my voice is the strongest for all Texas.”

Labor deserves to have answers to questions regarding free trade…and all of the concerns you have about American labor. Free trade is changing our lives daily and you deserve to have specific answers to laws that will effect labor. However, my opponent Mr. Noriega refuses to debate me and allow these answers for you. You deserve to hear a real debate and Mr. Noriega is denying this opportunity.”

“Even the junior senator Mr. Cornyn is debating his challenger, Larry Kilgore, in this election…I feel like I deserve that opportunity. Mr. Noriega in his campaign material talks about answering the call. Well sir, I am calling you out, and asking you to debate me….this election is about you and the people of Texas, nothing else…a lot of people want to make this election about money…if this election is about money, we have already lost.”

“Not even Mr. Noriega can raise the money to match John Cornyn. The Democratic party must shift our interest from million dollar donors and back to the millions of people who have been demoralized by the Bush administration….”

“My appeal will go beyond what Victor Morales was able to do…I will beat John Cornyn…I am offering the people of Texas a real contrast…Mr. Noriega will get up in a minute and talk about Texas values…[says Noriega should stand up and debate him].”

Now, McMurrey is criticizing Noreiga for not having publicly made specific certain things with regard to what he will do for labor when elected.

Now telling a story about an 80-year-old man at a pharmacy his wife saw who couldn’t get his meds because he didn’t have the money to pay what insurance would cover.

“There is not a voice for ordinary Americans in Washington, D.C.” “I feel like I deserve your vote.”

“We can’t forget that labor also creates wealth and Labor has been factored out of trade agreements….American labor has been hurt. the value of labor in the West is being diminished….”

“There is 21st century disuised slavery going on in the West.”

Criticizes Rham Emanuel and Evan Byah for doing bad things to Labor.

links from Technorati“I’ve Had Enough” speech that outlined those important differences that we have with the GOP. And McMurrey? He ignored those issues and cut away to whine about unrelated campaign process issues, includingthis statement. “Mr. Cornyn is debating his challenger, Larry Kilgore, in this election…I feel like I deserve that opportunity. Mr. Noriega in his campaign material talks about answering the call. Well sir, I am calling you out, and asking you to debate me….this
