Ethics Complaint Filed In Bexar County DA Race

It isn’t the DA’s race we’ve been hearing the most about across the state this election cycle, but nonetheless, the Republican candidate seeking to be the DA in the 198th Judicial District, has had an ethics complaint filed against him for misleading voters about currently holding office:
A complaint has been filed with the Texas Ethics Commission regarding the campaign of Republican Amos Barton, now assistant district attorney in the 198th judicial district, by a Democrat who, like Barton, is vying to succeed retiring District Attorney Ron Sutton.
Richard Ellison’s complaint concerns a badge worn by Barton — and featured in his campaign brochures — that reads “198th Dist. Attorney State of Texas Amos Barton,” and a sign outside Barton’s Kerrville office that said, “198th District Attorney” and included Barton’s name.
Ellison said the badge and sign violate the state election code provisions that bar candidates for an office from making representations that may lead voters to conclude they already hold the office.
Barton, who is running against Donnie Coleman in the Republican primary, denied misleading anyone. He said the badge was issued to him by Sutton to reflect his association with the office, and the sign merely indicated the location of the agency’s office where he works.
Interesting.
