HD 27: Ron Reynolds Podcast

Charles Kuffner over at Off The Kuff has a very good interview up with Ron Reynolds (D-Stafford), who is running for State Rep. in House District 27 in Fort Bend County.

Among other things, Reynolds says he would “adamantly oppose” Tom Craddick for Speaker of the House, which is a good plus. “They cannot corner me as a Craddick D in any way, shape, form or fashion,” Reynolds says, and notes that he has received calls to “feel [him] out” in that area.

He also affirms that he is pro-choice. “I believe in a woman’s right to choose. I am pro-choice,” Reynolds said. This is a major point of difference between he and Olivo. He was also positive on the issue of stem cell research–another area where Olivo is under fire. “As a Representative, I would not put my personal interests above my constituents,” he said. Reynolds said that, from a policy standpoint he saw this as the biggest difference between he and Olivo.

Reynolds also frankly addresses the issues we raised some time ago about some bar grievances that had been filed against him. Here is what Reynolds had to say:

“I am a licensed attorney with the state bar of Texas. I had my license suspended several years ago and I am not ashamed to say that I made a mistake with the client. My mother was ill, I missed a few deadlines, and I paid the price for it. I have learned from mistakes I made in the past, and I have made mistakes in the past…I made a mistake and I actually had to pay for it…I think that sometimes people try to cloud the issues or a person’s credibility because of mistakes they’ve made in the past, but if we are truthful, we have all made mistakes in life…When I made these errors, it was early in my legal career, I had a mother who was really, really ill. She had had a stroke and I was taking care of her…I had so much going on and I lost focus when my mother was ill and I let a few things slip through the cracks….my license was reinstated and I have won numerous awards for my advocacy…while I made a mistake, looking at my record as a whole, I have a strong record as being an advocate….I don’t make any excuses about it; I don’t make any apology about it because I know I made a mistake and I am willing to admit my mistake and move forward…” [Note: We transcribed this from Kuff's podcast.]

You have to give Reynolds credit for talking about this in this way. A lot of attorneys who have faced grievances actually don’t mind turning the story around by blaming it on their clients, which is always an annoyance.

He follows Kuffner in commenting that “you have to give Reynolds credit for talking about this in this way”, so I’d have to say
