Mike Huckabee, Rick Perry, John McCain, And Texas: The Primary Is No Lock In The Lone Star State

By Vince Leibowitz  on Feb 11, 2008 in 2008 Presidential Race

If you thought the GOP Presidential race was dead as far as Texas was concerned–think again. With conservatives contending that John McCain isn’t “the real deal,” and his cool reception at CPAC this week, and Mike Huckabee besting him in some more recent primary contests, it is clear that Texas is still in play when it comes to the GOP Primary.

To those who follow Texas politics, it should come as no surprise that–given the primary has made it to Texas–that the state’s GOP voters would be anything but a lock for McCain.

After all, evangelicals have a large hold on the Republican Party of Texas. And, Rick Perry, aka “Governor 39 percent” and his endorsement of McCain can’t exactly be considered to have much sway on Texas voters. Even Huckabee himself seems to think his endorsement by former Walker, Texas Ranger Chuck Norris carries more weight in the Lone Star State than Perry’s endorsement.

Although McCain leads in the most recent IRV poll of GOP voters, no poll can clearly measure or determine what Texas’ large evangelical, Christian GOP grassrootsers will do. If Huckabee, a Baptist minister, is able to woo Texas’ evangelicals, he could indeed have a chance here in Texas.
