Shapiro Has Eye On Hutchison’s Seat

Add State Sen. Florence Shapiro (R-Plano) to the list of people who have an eye on U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison’s senate seat–if and when Hutchison resigns to run for governor (or be sworn in as governor, or retire, morphs into a griffin, become a shampoo spokeswoman, etc.):
If U.S. Sen . Kay Bailey Hutchison resigns – say, to run for governor – Shapiro “has a strong interest in pursuing a campaign,” said Bryan Eppstein, political consultant to both women.
“About a year ago, Roger Staubach said he would serve as a co-chairman for Sen. Shapiro if the opportunity were to arise that she could run for U.S. Senate. That interest has continued over the past year. That’s kind of where it is right now. It’s just a growing, continued interest if the opportunity presents itself,” Eppstein said.
Shapiro has been calling around to give a headsup to people including fellow state Sen. Jeff Wentworth, R-San Antonio, that they may be hearing something about this.
“She did say that she would never oppose Senator Hutchison, but that she was thinking about running to take her place if and when she came back to run for governor or finished the current term,” Wentworth said.
This means Shapiro joins the ranks of Lt. Governor David Dewhurst, Congresswoman Kay Granger (R-Fort Worth), and at least a dozen other Republicans who have at various points been mentioned as contenders for Granger’s seat.
