Culberson Bends The Truth About Earmarks…Again!

Published on June 11, 2008 with No Comments

It seems as though Congressman John Culberson isn’t content to just lie to the media about his earmarks. Now, he’s lying to his constituents in a mailer sent out using their tax dollars through his congressional office.

This week, Culberson franked out a mailer to his constituents on health care in which he asserted his distaste for earmarks.
He claimed, on health care, that he has brought, “quality health care to Texas families” and claims that he is “fighting to make health care a reality for all families.”

What a lie, as Michael Skelly, who is opposing Culberson, points out:

John Culberson’s rhetoric does not match his record. By voting against bipartisan legislation, he has consistently sided with special interests instead of with the seniors and children in our district. He’s made it more difficult for seniors to afford the medications they can’t live without, and impossible for thousands of children in Texas to get the health care coverage they deserve.

On earmarks, Culberson claims:

I apply a rigorous standard of fiscal responsibility to every spending request I receive. My starting answer is always ‘no’… and a ‘yes’ is very hard to earn.”

Really? I guess that is why Culberson supported a billion dollars worth of earmarks last fiscal year, including for marketing wild shrimp (can you domesticate them?) and hydroponic tomato production.

Remember that Culberson, who also has an earmark for a massive statue of John Adams, has previously said he only goes for earmarks that support:

basic functions such as national security, border protection, transportation and medical research.

Sadly, hydroponic tomato production and wild shrimp don’t qualify. Neither does his $300 million earmark for the Houston Zoo.

Maybe Culberson has been eating too many hydroponic tomatoes, because he can’t seem to keep his story straight. Let’s help Culberson not have to worry about keeping his story straight, and send Michael Skelly to Congress.

  1. prudent with the resources you’ve got to work with. It doesn’t, or at least it shouldn’t, mean being a cheapskate, and it doesn’t, or at least it shouldn’t, mean oppose spending for the sake of opposing spending, especially when such opposition is moreKabuki dancethan fiscal policy. To me at least, supporting an appropriate amount of spending on needed services, and recognizing when that means more spending is needed due to population growth, cost increases, or just the need to do more, is perfectly in line
