Chet Edwards For Vice President?
By Vince Leibowitz on Jun 24, 2008 in 2008 Presidential Race
Nancy Pelosi seems to think so:
Here is a transcript of what she said:
“Anyone that Barack Obama wants is my choice for vice president,” Pelosi told the interviewer, who appeared to be from Newsweek. “But I do think in the list of considerations there should be somebody from the House of Representatives and Chet Edwards is a person that many of us think would be a good person to be in the mix.”
I’ve already heard one Republican say that Chet Edwards would be Obama’s Dan Quayle, but I think that is far from reality. While he may be in the same position with regard to national name recognition as Quayle was when Bush senior picked him as a running mate in 1992 (and again, even that is not one hundred percent correct because Edwards’ last two races have made headlines around the nation), Edwards is is a far, far better and more experienced politician than Quayle was when he was selected.
Too, given that many Texas Republicans aren’t all that excited about McCain, having a “homes state advantage” on the ticket could really help Obama win Texas in November.
Clearly, Edwards as Vice President would surely help the ticket in Texas. And, thanks to the LBJ Law, Edwards will also be able to run for his seat in Congress. However, with him running for Veep it might inspire the GOP’s national congressional campaign apparatus to pour money into the district in spite of the fact that he has a very lackluster GOP opponent this time.
And, if Edwards was the Veep selection and Obama won, it would, of course, mean there would be a very nasty battle for the 17th Congressional District.
