Culberson Obstructs Bill That Will Save Taxpayers Money
By Vince Leibowitz on Jun 25, 2008 in 2008 Texas Elections
A press release from the Skelly campaign which is worth noting in its entirety:
On Tuesday morning, Congressman John Culberson (TX-07) used classic obstructionist tactics to try to thwart debate on H.R. 6331, a bipartisan bill that would decrease
the deficit and save taxpayers’ money by focusing on preventative health care.
“John Culberson is standing with special interests instead of with Houston taxpayers. He is playing the same Washington game that the voters of Houston are tired of and cannot afford,” said Michael Skelly, successful wind energy businessman and candidate for Congress (TX-07).
The bipartisan bill passed overwhelmingly, 355-59, with John Culberson voting no.
At 10:59am EDT, Culberson tried to prevent a vote on the legislation by moving to adjourn the House and end the day’s business, a typical Washington delay tactic. His was the second attempt to adjourn the House.
Culberson voted against his own motion.
“This bill will reduce the deficit and save taxpayers’ money by focusing on preventative health care. How can John Culberson call himself fiscally responsible while voting against fiscally responsible legislation?”
According to the Congressional Budget Office, the bill would reduce the deficit by $300 million over the 2008-2013 period.
Skelly is a successful businessman who led the development of Horizon Wind Energy from the ground up. Nine years later, it is a multi-billion dollar operation, the third largest wind energy company in the country. By the end of the year, the Houston-based business will generate enough electricity to meet the needs of nearly one million American homes. Skelly has helped create thousands of jobs and has been one of the leading innovators in his field, having worked in dozens of states to increase the supply of domestically produced energy powering American homes.
Michael serves on Mayor White’s Green Building Advisory Committee, is a longtime member of the board of the American Wind Energy Association, and has served on the boards of several other nonprofits and companies. He lives in West University Place with his wife, Anne, and their three children, ages 15, 13, and 11.
