TX HD 149: Vo’s Opponent Shows Lackluster Fundraising, With Most Coming From The Usual Rightwing Suspects
By Vince Leibowitz on Jul 15, 2008 in 2008 Texas Elections
Greg Meyers (R-Houston), who is opposing State Rep. Hubert Vo (D-Houston) in the race for Texas House District 149 has filed a fairly lackluster six-month financial report which includes some fairly interesting donors.
Of the about $57,000 that Meyers raised, about 40 percent came from the usual right-wing sources: Bob “Swift Boat” Perry gave $10,000; Texans for Lawsuit Reform gave $10,000; State Rep. Beverly Wooley gave a thousand, conservative commentator Gary Polland threw in $500, and the Associated Republicans of Texas PAC gave a paltry $500 (which could well show exactly how well that PAC thinks Meyers is doing.
It amusingly looks like Meyers’ campaign is little more than a money-laundering scheme for the state’s most radical rightwingers.
Also of note, almost all of Meyers’ expenditures were to one firm: the Patriot Group, the political firm backed by James Leininger where Meyer’s consultant, Matt Welch is employed. Patriot Group got $27,000 of the $34K Meyers spent.
In addition, Meyers, who is a Houston ISD trustee, took in $7,500 in donations from vendors who serve Houston ISD. Another $13,300 came from standard Harris County GOP donors who also give to George W. Bush, John Cornyn, and the Republican Party of Texas.
Vo, on the other hand, will report about $100,000 raised in the race and more campaign cash on hand than Meyers has left, sources tell us.
