TX CD 10: Doherty Picks Up Endorsements From Educators

A press release of note from the Doherty campaign:

Larry Joe Doherty, Democratic nominee for U.S. Congress in Texas’ 10th Congressional District, proudly announced Wednesday the endorsement of the largest state and national educators organizations. By officially endorsing Doherty, the National Education Association (NEA), the Texas State Teachers Association (TSTA), the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), and the Texas AFT, affirm Doherty’s desire to bring needed attention to our nation’s education system.

“Our nation’s educators are the the backbone of ensuring our children receive a world class education,” said Doherty. “We can no longer neglect to fund our education system, and must provide our educators with the tools and resources they need to prepare our kids to compete in this growing global economy.”

With membership of more than 4.6 million educators nationwide, these four front-line organizations represent the teachers who are working hard in our classrooms everyday. In fact, in 2007, McCaul received an ‘F’ rating from the NEA due to his lack of support for ‘quality public education.’

“Larry Joe Doherty will take the fight to Washington on behalf of our educators, students and schools,” said Louis Malfaro, President of Education Austin. “We are proud to support a candidate who understands that a strong commitment to our public education system is the key to long-term economic health for Texas kids, families, and businesses.”

Doherty is committed to working with these organizations to fix No Child Left Behind (NCLB). Republican incumbent Michael McCaul has voted to strip $806 billion in vital funding from the program (HR 3010, 6/24/05, Vote #321).

“I will be a dependable voice for our nation’s teachers and students instead of a rubber stamp for a party whose policies are out of touch with the American people,” said Doherty.

Sadly, McCaul’s record on our education system only gets worse. He has repeatedly voted to cut financial aid for working families trying to send their children to college. Last year, he voted to gut the College Student Relief Act (HR 5, 1/17/07, Vote #31), which would provide lower college interest loan rates for working families. He has also voted for the largest cuts to federal student aid programs in history (HRes 653, 2/1/06, Vote #4).

Last month, Doherty reported he raised over $247,000 in the 2nd quarter. The race for Texas’ 10th Congressional District has also gained national attention as The Cook Political Report, an independent and non-partisan analysis group, recently upgraded the competitiveness of TX-10. The Southern Political Report also identifies Doherty’s challenge as one of only 12 Republican-held Congressional seats being competitively challenged in the South, and the only race in Texas.

Larry Joe Doherty, a former attorney who specialized in suing lawyers who had committed legal malpractice, starred in the syndicated television series Texas Justice. He was nominated to challenge McCaul with over 61% of the Democratic Primary vote. A Houston native, Larry Joe and his wife, Joanne, reside and maintain a wildlife preserve in Washington County.
