HD 64: McClelland Calls On Perry To Commute Sentence Of Death Row Prisoner

Democratic State Representative candidate John McClelland (D-Little Elm) is calling on Texas Governor Rick Perry to halt the planned execution of José Medellín. Both the Bush Administration and the United Nations have asked Perry to halt the execution.
“I submitted a request to Governor Perry that he commute the sentence of José Medellín to life in prison,” said McClelland. “There are admitted irregularities in this case. Mr. Medellín was not given access to the Mexican consulate, which was a violation of international treaties we have agreed to as Americans. Both the UN and the Bush administration have asked that Mr. Medellín not be executed. As Texas juries now have the option of sentencing those convicted of capital murder to life in prison, I feel it is Governor Perry’s duty to commute this man’s sentence.”
José Medellín is currently scheduled to be executed on Tuesday August 5.
John McClelland is the Democratic nominee for Texas House District 64, which represents Denton, Corinth, Lake Dallas, Hickory Creek, Shady Shores, Oak Point, Lakewood Village, Lincoln Park, Paloma Creek South, Little Elm, and The Colony.
