Six Texas Churches Openly Challenge IRS Rules Against Pulpit Politicking

Over the weekend, six Texas churches took part in a nationwide protest staged by the ultra-rightwing Alliance Defense Fund to challenge Internal Revenue Service regulations that prohibit churches from engaging in organized political activity.

The event, billed as “Pulpit Freedom Sunday” featured pastors giving politically-charged sermons in the hopes of sparking complaints to the IRS which the ADF hopes will ultimately lead to a change in current regulations. At least six churches–none in Texas–that participated in the program are already the subject of IRS complaints and could use their coveted 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status.

Texas Congressman Hensarling Not Joining Call For Paulson’s Resignation

Via PolitickerTX, we learn that Texas Congressman Jeb Hensarling (R-Dallas), isn’t joining other Republicans in calling on Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson to resign following yesterday’s failure of the $700 billion bailout package he engineered to pass the House.

Hensarling, a well-known deficit hawk who has scratched and clawed his way up the GOP leadership ladder in a measly three terms in Congress now chairs the Republican Study Committee and is rumored to have his eye on U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison’s seat in 2012–or 2010, if she resigns to further her run for governor.

TX HD 17: Parent PAC Endorses Donnie Dipple

Texas Parent PAC, a bipartisan political action committee focusing on education issues, has endorsed Democrat Donnie Dipple in the House District 17 race. HD 17 includes all of Bastrop, Burleson, Colorado, Fayette, and Lee Counties and part of Brazos County. This is the open legislative seat held by Robby Cook, who is retiring after serving in the Texas House of Representatives for 12 years.

Corpus Christi, Dallas Papers Endorse In Key House Races

The Corpus Christi Caller-Times and Dallas Morning News have released their endorsements in several key races. Among those are the House District 32 race that pits State Rep. Juan Garcia (D-Corpus Christi) against Todd Hunter (R-Corpus Christi) and the House District 102 race where incumbent Tony Goolsby (R-Dallas) faces a serious challenge from former Richardson ISD trustee Carol Kent (D-Lake Highlands).
