Kay Granger Making The Rounds At Republican Convention, But You Won’t Believe Why

It should come as no surprise to any of us that U.S. Congresswoman Kay Granger (R-Fort Worth) is making some serious rounds at the republican National Convention in Minneapolis. After all, she’s the Vice Chair of the House Republican Conference and was mentioned this year as a potential running mate for Arizona Senator John McCain.

The interesting thing about Granger’s activities this week, however, is that she isn’t just generally speaking about the ticket. As a former mayor, she’s clearly been roped in by the McCain team to specifically talk up how hard it is being a mayor to help bolster Governor Sarah Palin’s bona fides:

“I’m telling everybody that I’m tired of this dismissive attitude toward mayors,” the former Fort Worth mayor said, referring to comments about former Wasilla, Alaska, mayor Sarah Palin, now McCain’s choice for vice president.

“Believe me, a mayor is not ‘just a mayor.’ When you’re a mayor, you’re on call all the time. Your phone number is in the directory. You see everybody in the drugstore or the grocery store.”

Of course, there is a significant difference between being the mayor of Fort Worth Texas and being the mayor of Wasilla, Alaska. How so? Well, let’s consider this: Wasilla city hall; Fort Worth City Hall.

It is difficult to believe that Granger would be willing to demean her own tenure as Fort Worth’s mayor by actually comparing her work in Cowtown to the work of Palin in a city that doesn’t compare to Fort Worth in size or any other statistic. And, as many criticisms as there are of Granger, I’ve not heard anyone accuse her of mismanaging the town’s finances.
