HD 129: The Same Old John Davis: More Concerned More About District’s Ability To Produce Dollars Than Recovery

Yesterday, we told you about State Rep. John Davis’ tacky and ill-timed fundraiser invite that his campaign spammed out in spite of the fact that his district was hit hard by Hurricane Ike.
As is typical with Republicans, you can’t stick one in a hole that they won’t manage to dig deeper. This time, Davis, who is still nowhere to be found (one wonders if he evacuated himself to Bermuda or New Zeland given his scarcity) lets his campaign consultant, Alan Blakemore, take shovel in hand to do the digging with this idiotic comment:
Generally, Blakemore said, “you’re going to see folks from the Houston area looking to other parts of the state to do campaign fundraising… With little ability to raise funds in the district, with campaign activities in the district and throughout Houston suspended, you have to look elsewhere — and Austin is a logical place to look.”
Clearly to John Davis (R-Clear Lake), it is all about the money. Davis is worse than a crack whore jonesing for that next score. Like a crack addict groping around under the couch cushions for a leftover rock to freebase, Davis just takes his money whoring operation upstate, since his district is devastated and can’t exactly fork over the funds he needs to finance his campaign and his $1,500 boots. This man is addicted to campaign cash. For goodness sakes, someone throw this man a roll of quarters before he expires.
He clearly doesn’t give a damned about his constituents. Everyone else in the region has suspended their campaigns or has turned their campaign operations into relief efforts. Not Davis. He’s just looking for his next score–of cash, that is.
Davis is opposed by one of the best challengers in the entire state: Sherrie Matula (D-Houston), a longtime public school teacher, who happens to be running one of the most competitive races in the entire state. Here is what her campaign manager, Martha Griffin, had to say about Davis’ antics:
“It seems irresponsible for Davis to be going ahead with a fundraiser that’s sponsored by lobbyists at the same time his district is flooded, we have widespread power outages and frankly, nobody we know has heard from John Davis in terms of helping the community.”
It is inexcusable for a sitting state representative to abandon his district in its time of need. It is further inexcusable for a sitting state representative to go on the hunt for dollars while neglecting his district.
What kind of man can call himself a “public servant” when the very public he is supposed to be serving is suffering and he is out doing lord knows what and fundraising? It’s akin to Nero fiddling while Rome burned (except, to our knowledge, fiddling isn’t among John Davis’ limited talents).
I suppose this shouldn’t be much of a surprise to us though. It’s just the Same Old John Davis. It’s just the latest in a long line of examples of John Davis taking a proverbial piss all over his district.
This is the same John Davis who voted against a teacher pay raise. [Amendment 63, CSHB 1, (Hse. 2nd Rdg.), House Journal, 46th Day, 80th Texas Legislature, Record Vote 233, p. 1313-1315]
This is the same John Davis who put the interest of Bob “Swift Boat” Perry, the Houston homebuilder who is one of his campaign contributors, above the interests of low-income Texas kids who want to go to college. [Amendment 77, CSHB 1, (Hse. 2nd. Rdg.), House Journal, 46th Day, 80th Texas Legislature, Record Vote 237, pp. 1324-1325].
This is the same John Davis who voted to waste state money on hired lobbyists. [Amendment 132, CSHB 1, (Hse. 2nd Rdg.), House Journal, 46th Day, 80th Texas Legislature, Record Vote 246, pp. 1363-1364].
This is the same John Davis who voted to disenfranchise millions of Texans. [House Journal, 80th Texas Legislature, Day 61, Record Vote 621, pp. 2246-2247].
This is the same John Davis who voted for corporate welfare. [House Journal, 78th Texas Legislature, Day 80, Record Vote 778, p. 4559]
This is the same John Davis who voted against making sure Texas children were immunized. [Amendment 66, CSHB 1, (Hse. 2nd Rdg.), House Journal, 51st Day, 78th Texas Legislature, Record Vote 248, pp. 1472-1473].
This is the same John Davis who voted against Special Needs children. [Amendment 74, CSHB 1, (Hse. 2nd Rdg.), House Journal, 51st Day, 78th Texas Legislature, Record Vote 252, pp. 1477-1478].
This is the same John Davis who voted against nursing home patients. [Amendment 115, CSHB 1, (Hse. 2nd Rdg.), House Journal, 51st Day, 78th Texas Legislature, Record Vote 250, pp. 1500-1501].
This is the same John Davis who voted against retired teachers. [Amendment 261, CSHB 1, (Hse. 2nd Rdg.), House Journal, 51st Cay, 78th Texas Legislature, Record Vote 287, pp. 1601].
Show John Davis it’s time to give the boot to more of the same Austin, whoring-for-dollars politics. Drop some money to the Red Cross, and ask them to earmark it for House District 129. John Davis may not do anything to help his district, but we can.
