Presidio Levee Breaks: Republicans Could Have Helped, Did Nothing

By Vince Leibowitz  on Sep 19, 2008 in 2008 Texas Elections, Texas News

The Associated Press is reporting that a levee protecting the West Texas town of Presidio, along the banks of the Rio Grande River, has broken, and that water is heading toward the populated areas of the city.

Capitol Annex first brought you this story on Wednesday, when the water had breached the levee and flooded a nearby golf course. The Governor has proclaimed a disaster in the area.

The poor condition of levees along the Rio Grande River is nothing new. In fact, it has been an issue since before Hurricane Katrina permanently added “levee breach” to the American lexicon. Following Hurricane Katrina, when a serious push was made to get federal money to help restore the levees along the Rio Grande, nearly every Republican in the state’s Congressional delegation voted against the measure:

The roll of dishonor on H.Amdt. 712 to HB 4939 includes deficit-hawk Jeb Hensarling, Tom DeLay, ex-Fort Worth Mayor Kay Granger, Sam Johnson, Mac Thornberry, Kenny Marchant, Mike Conway, Henry Bonilla (whose district touches on the border), Culberson, and Carter.

I’m sure the people of Presidio are pleased as punch at these guys. DeLay and Bonilla are, thankfully, long gone, but Cluberson and Carter are still around, and ripe for defeat this election cycle.
