TX CD 10: McCaul Puts Dollars Over Debate
Vince Leibowitz | Sep 22, 2008 | Comments 0
Texas Congressman Mike McCaul is refusing to debate Democrat Larry Joe Doherty (D-Brenham) citing various and sundry “scheduling conflicts,” the Austin American-Statesman (who was trying to sponsor a debate) reports:
“We have a time conflict with those days, and we have so much scheduled in the district,” McCaul campaign spokesman Jack Ladd said. “We’re just not going to be able to do it.”
[...]
On Oct. 6, Ladd said, McCaul will attend a fundraiser for congressional candidates with President Bush in San Antonio and has congressional business that afternoon. Ladd also said McCaul has “voting rallies throughout the district” scheduled for Oct. 20.
Ah. As is typical with Republicans, it’s “dollars over debates.” McCaul is turning down an opportunity to debate his opponents in favor of raising money with President Bush.
How out of touch is Mike McCaul? Doesn’t he realize Bush’s approval rating is at 19 percent?

raised over $1 million to take on McCaul, the richest Congressman from Texas and 11th richest Congressman overall. And how does McCaul raise his money? Fundraisers with Rush Limbaugh or Bush, which McCaulfelt more importantthan debating Doherty. Doherty is putting his money to good use with the below commercial. It’s the first TV commercial in the district since the creation of the DeLay-gerrymandered Texas Congressional map, which stretches from Austin to Houston.
