TX CD 22: Republicans Try To Put Distance Between Pete Olson And Phil Gramm

It’s interesting that the National Republican Congressional Campaign Committee is making a concerted effort to place some distance between their nominee in Congressional District 22, Pete Olson, and his former boss, former U.S. Senator Phil Gramm (R-Texas):
Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, laid out his assessment of Lampson’s re-election chances and prospects for two other members of the Houston-area congressional delegation during a briefing with reporters this morning.
Cole said Lampson’s congressional district remains predominantly Republican and his Republican challenger has a compelling biography as a former Navy pilot and former chief of staff to Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas.
Olson prevailed in a tough GOP primary fight, Cole says, and impressed top Republicans during so-called “candidates’ school.”
Cole’s choice of words was very interesting. Note that he said Olson was a former chief of staff to John Cornyn, but omitted that he worked for Gramm for years before he worked for Cornyn–including as Gramm’s chief of staff.
As much as Republicans try to distance Olson from Gramm, they’ll never be able to whitewash that. Olson adapted his economic policies at the feet of Foreclosure Phil. As it’s been said before, “If Wall Street got drunk, Phil Gramm and Pete Olson were tending bar.”
