Corpus Christi, Dallas Papers Endorse In Key House Races

The Corpus Christi Caller-Times and Dallas Morning News have released their endorsements in several key races. Among those are the House District 32 race that pits State Rep. Juan Garcia (D-Corpus Christi) against Todd Hunter (R-Corpus Christi) and the House District 102 race where incumbent Tony Goolsby (R-Dallas) faces a serious challenge from former Richardson ISD trustee Carol Kent (D-Lake Highlands).
The Caller-Times made some hits and misses with its endorsements. While the paper made the right choice in the HD 32 race, picking incumbent Juan Garcia over Todd Hunter, it missed the boat entirely in HD 34 by failing to endorse Abel Herrero (D-Robstown) solely on the fact that he did not live up to their expectations as “leader” of the Corpus Christi/Nueces County delegation to the Texas Legislature. The CCCT simply punted in the HD 33 race by not endorsing anyone, claiming they don’t like the fact that Rep. Solomon Ortiz, Jr. is related to other politicians from the Corpus Christi area.
Meanwhile, the Dallas Morning News did a pretty decent job with its endorsements. In endorsing Carol Kent in HD 102, the paper noted:
This is a difficult call to make, considering the incumbent’s service. Ms. Kent, however, has the potential that makes a persuasive argument for change.
That’s very surprising coming from a newspaper that typically sides with incumbents but most often sides with Republicans regardless of how shoddy a job they do at governing.
In the HD 106 race, the DMN has glowing words for Rep. Kirk England (D-Grand Prairie). But, the most amusing aspect of the HD 106 op-ed was what they had to say about his sadly hapless opponent:
Ms. Wiegman, 59, a former Grand Prairie school board member, would abolish the business tax and would not replace its revenue stream. Instead, she would rely on the hope that the budget surplus and increased economic activity from lower taxes on businesses would generate sufficient revenue.
This plan, which she concedes is “a leap of faith,” would not only toss the state budget into chaos but also fail to satisfy the Texas Supreme Court’s demand for legislators to come up with a constitutional way of funding schools.
Needless to say, this lady doesn’t seem to have much of a clue about how Texas government works.
In HD 111, the DMN endorsed Rep. Yvonne Davis (D-DeSoto) over another hapless Republican.
