HOT HOUSE RACES: Texas House District 149 (LEAN DEMOCRATIC)

Texas House District 149: State Rep. Hubert Vo (D-Houston) versus Rep. Greg Meyers (R-Houston). Incumbent Protection; LEAN DEMOCRATIC. Were it not for the fact that Vo allowed Republicans to gather up something they could hold over his head this election cycle, this would be a SAFE DEMOCRATIC seat. However, politics is politics and, well, stuff happens.

Nevertheless, the district still leans in Vo’s favor in no small part because his opponent, Greg Meyers, is a right-wing Republican from the old school. He’s pro-school vouchers and anti-education in spite of the fact that he served as a trustee of the Houston Independent School District.

Voters in Vo’s district have previously rejected the kind of leadership that Meyers would be likely to provide when they ousted State Rep. Talmadge Heflin (R-Houston) back in 2004. After Heflin tried again without success to unseat Vo, Republicans are making one last attempt to replace him before writing the district off as unwinnable until after redistricting and the 2012 election cycle.

Vo has a good record on behalf of his district: good constituent services, and a record that is pro-education and pro-small business–the kind of things his district likes to see. He’s in touch with the district and, by and large, we don’t believe that the situations the Republicans exploited early in the campaign will matter much come election day. He’ already been endorsed by the state’s top two teacher’s groups.

WHAT THE DEMOCRAT NEEDS TO WIN: Vo needs to stay the course and not be distracted by anything. He needs to continue to highlight the fact that he represents change from the failed Heflin years, and that Meyers is just Heflin by another name.

WHAT WILL TIP IT: We might be forced to downgrade our ranking if the Republicans mounted a costly smear offensive against Vo. Frankly, we think that’s all they can actually do to try to gain ground as Vo, in spite of his shortcomings, is a quality representative who is in touch with his district.
