Texas Among Least Prepared For Voting Machine Malfunctions, Study Shows

Texas is one of the states least prepared to address problems that might crop up with voting equipment this election year, according to a new joint study by the Brennan Center, Common Cause Education Fund, and the Verified Voting Foundation, reports the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Here’s more:
The study faulted Texas for not using any paper record on its electronic voting machines to ensure that votes are being recorded accurately. The state’s Democratic and Republican parties have called for adding a voter-verifiable paper backup system so voters can check their electronic vote against a paper backup. The Texas secretary of state’s office is required to approve all election equipment in the state but has not validated any paper-trail systems. The report also criticized Texas for being one of eight states with no requirement for emergency paper ballots to be available in precincts in case electronic machines malfunction.
Needless to say, this isn’t great news 20-something days out from a major national election.
