TX HD 129: John Davis Misleads Voters About His Record In New Mailer

In one of the state’s most hotly contested House races, incumbent State Rep. John Davis (R-Clear Lake) has stooped to lying about his record and misleading voters in order to hold on to his House seat against a tough challenge from Democrat Sherrie Matula (R-Clear Lake).

Among other things, Davis misled voters on his position related to teacher pay raises. Davis’ mailer notes:

“John Davis supported legislation that provided a $2,000 state-funded pay increase for teachers, encouraging the creation of locally designed incentive plans to increase teacher performance.”

John Davis had to stretch back into his dusty volumes of the Texas House Journal to find his last vote in favor of a teacher pay raise because during the most recent session of the Texas Legislature, John Davis actually voted against a teacher pay raise.

John Davis voted against an amendment to the General Appropriations Act (HB 1)which would have given Texas’ public school employees a pay raise [Amendment 63, CSHB 1, (Hse. 2nd Rdg.), House Journal, 46th Day, 80th Texas Legislature, Record Vote 233, p. 1313-1315].

Amendment 63 was amended to include a pay raise for public school employees via the adoption of Amendment 64, an amendment to the amendment. Davis was actually absent for the vote to table the amendment to the amendment and did not record any position statement in the journal on the vote or the reason for his absence from the chamber at that time. He voted against the amended Amendment 63, which was a vote AGAINST a teacher pay raise.

Davis, of course, doesn’t want his constituents to know that. Davis’ actual vote and position, however, is in sharp contrast to what he claims on his mailer:

“The classroom teachers of Texas deserve our respect and admiration–and a raise.”

John Davis is simply a liar. If he believed that, he would have voted for a teacher pay raise. Instead, he was absent on one vote related to the teacher pay raise and voted against the raise the second time it came up.

links from TechnoratiMatula continues to perform amazingly in her race to turn Clear Lake blue. She has about $75,000 more cash on hand than her opponent, who is another example of the Republican plague upon Texas. Heobfuscates his record(his terrible record), and has extreme ethics problems. The Houston Chronicle endorsed her opponent, but they also published this stinging rebuke to that endorsement: In September, the Chronicle ran an editorial regarding the series of ethics
