TX HD 144: Racially Charged Mailer Against Redmond Funded By Bob “Swift Boat” Perry’s Cash

By now, most of our readers are probably aware of the racially-charged mailer (page one, page two) sent out by the right-wing political action committee “Empower Texans” in Texas House District 144 against Joel Redmond (D-Pasadena).
What you might not know, however, is that none other than Houston home builder Bob Perry is one of Empower Texans’ chief sources of funding. Perry, of course, is best known for funding Swift Boat Veterans for Truth during the 2004 presidential election.
Glenn Smith of the Texas Progress Council has the story over at Open Left. John over at Bay Area Houston breaks down the numbers for us:
Just what is Bob Perry saying in this mailer? Empower Texans only has $52,441.47 with $50,000 coming from Bob Perry. And Ken Legler, Joel Redmonds opponent, only has $14,000 in his account while only raising $44,000. Needless to say, Legler is looking for outside help.
When asked at a San Jacinto College forum if he had seen the mailer, Legler just nodded his head and said “Yes”. Maybe he should have been asked if he approved of this message.
By the way, Bob Perry has given Legler $52,500. I think it is clear, Bob Perry and Legler have approved of this message. This is a pretty low stunt for someone who claims to be a “Christian”.
Basically, Bob Perry is trying to buy himself another legislator, like he’s bought and paid for another Harris County legislator, John Davis.
